Using drones to create local quantum networks

A team of researchers affiliated with several institutions in China has used drones to create a prototype of a small airborne quantum network. In their paper published in the journal Physical Review Letters, the researchers describe sending entangled particles from one drone to another and from a drone to the ground.
Computer scientists, physicists and engineers have been working over the last several years toward building a usable quantum network âdoing so would involve sending entangled particles between users and the result would be the most secure network ever made. As part of that effort, researchers have sent entangled particles over fiber cables, between towers and even from satellites to the ground. In this new effort, the researchers have added a new elementâdrones.
To build a long-range quantum network, satellites appear to be the ideal solution. But for smaller networks, such as for communications between users in the same city, another option is needed. While towers can be of some use, they are subject to weather and blockage, intentional or otherwise. To get around this problem, the researchers used drones to carry the signals.

Quantum Drones Take Flight

A small prototype of a drone-based quantum network has successfully relayed a quantum signal over a kilometer of free space.
The airwaves are chock full of âclassicalâ information from cell phones, radio stations, and Wi-Fi hubs, but one day those waves could be carrying quantum encrypted messages or data input for a quantum computer. A new experiment has used a pair of hovering drones to dole out quantum information to two ground stations separated by 1 km [1]. This demonstration could lead to a drone-based quantum network that could be positionedâand easily repositionedâover a city or rural area.
Quantum communication promises fully secure message sharing. For example, two users could exchange encrypted messages using âentangledâ photons, pairs of particles with a unique quantum-mechanical relationship. For every pair, one photon would be sent to each of the users, who would be alerted to any eavesdropping by a loss of entanglement between the photons. One of the most common methods for sending such quantum encrypted messages relies on optical fibers (see Viewpoint: Record Distance for Quantum Cryptography). But in fibers, a large fraction of the photons scatter before reaching their destination. More photons can survive if quantum information is transmitted through the atmosphere, as in the quantum link established using a Chinese satellite in 2018 (see Focus: Intercontinental, Quantum-Encrypted Messaging and Video). However, satellites are expensive and difficult to adapt to changing demands on the ground.

The Federal Aviation Administration has released new and looser rules for flying drones over highly populated areas and at night, effectively laying a welcome mat for future aerial deliveries of takeout food, Amazon packages, prescription drugs â you name it.
Why it matters: While the prospect of Jetsons-style convenience with less street gridlock is tantalizing, there are still plenty of logistical hurdles, and it will take some time for cities to figure out how to manage low-altitude air traffic as routinely as they do todayâs road traffic.
Driving the news: FAA rules â handed down late last month â will require drones flying over cities to use remote identification technology, so people on the ground can tell what theyâre doing and who owns them.

Verizon, UPS, and Skyward announce connected drone delivery at CES 2021

PORTLAND, Ore. â Skyward, A Verizon company, and UPS Flight Forward today announced collaborative efforts to deliver retail products with drones connected to Verizon 4G LTE, as well as 5G testing and integration for delivery. The companies aim to deliver retail products via connected drones at The Villages in Florida.
âWe will need the ability to manage and support multiple drones, flying simultaneously, dispatched from a centralized location, operating in a secure and safe environment. To do this at scale, alongside Verizon and Skyward, weâll need the power of 5G,â said Carol B. TomĂ©, CEO of UPS.

Police Robots Are Not a Selfie Opportunity, Theyâre a Privacy Disaster Waiting to Happen

The arrival of government-operated autonomous police robots does not look like predictions in science fiction movies. An army of robots with gun arms is not kicking down your door to arrest you. Instead, a robot snitch that looks like a rolling trash can is programmed to decide whether a person looks suspicious âand then call the human police on them. Police robots may not be able to hurt people like armed predator drones used in combatâ yet âbut as history shows, calling the police on someone can prove equally deadly.
Long before the 1987 movie Robocop, even before Karel Äapek invented the word robot in 1920, police have been trying to find ways to be everywhere at once. Widespread security cameras are one solutionâbut even a blanket of CCTV cameras couldnât follow a suspect into every nook of public space. Thus, the vision of a police robot continued as a dream, until now. Whether they look like Boston Dynamicsâ robodogs or Knightscopeâs rolling pickles, robots are coming to a street, shopping mall, or grocery store near you.

Convex to concave: More metasurface moiré results in wide-range lens

The odd, wavy pattern that results from viewing certain phone or computer screens through polarized glasses has led researchers to take a step toward thinner, lighter-weight lenses. Called moiré, the pattern is made by laying one material with opaque and translucent parts at an angle over another material of similar contrast.
A team of researchers from Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, TUAT, in Japan have demonstrated that moirĂ© metalensesâtiny, patterned lenses composed of artificial âmetaâ atomsâcan tune focal length along a wider range than previously seen. They published their results on November 23 in Optics Express.
âMetalenses have attracted a lot of interest because they are so thin and lightweight, and could be used in ultra-compact imaging systems, like future smart phones, virtual reality goggles, drones or microbots,â said paper author Kentaro Iwami, associate professor in the TUAT Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering.

This Drone Sniffs Out Odors With a Real Moth Antenna

âItâs all thanks to the sacrifice of the hawk moth Manduca sexta, which is an extremely sensitive smeller, like other moths. When a moth picks up a scent, like that of a flower or a potential mate, the odors bind to proteins inside the antennae, and these proteins in turn activate neurons dedicated to specific chemicals. That means the antennae are producing electrical signals that researchers can tap into. In order to create a sort of moth-drone cyborg, mechanical engineer Melanie Anderson of the University of Washington cold-anesthetized a hawk moth in a freezer before removing its antennae. Then she cut both ends off of a single antenna and attached each to an itty-bitty wire hooked up to an electrical circuit. âA lot like a heart monitor, which measures the electrical voltage that is produced by the heart when it beats, we measure the electrical signal produced by the antenna when it smells odor,â says Anderson, lead author on a recent paper in the journal Bioinspiration and Biomimetics describing the research. âAnd very similarly, the antenna will produce these spike-shaped pulses in response to patches of odor.ââ
Researchers slap a living antenna on a drone to give the machine an insanely keen sense of smell. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the âSmellicopter.â

Trapping light without back reflections

Microresonators are small glass structures in which light can circulate and build up in intensity. Due to material imperfections, some amount of light is reflected backwards, which is disturbing their function.
